Ruth Edge
Ruth Edge (neé Friend) has been riding as long as she can remember and had her first ride at Badminton when she was only 18, on Ice Dancer. In 2005, at still only 26, she took third place in British Eventing’s Premier League behind Badminton winner Andrew Hoy and Lucy Wiegersma. With a string of nineteen horses for 2007, Ruth has hopes of another good crack at Badminton and Burghley but you may be surprised to know she also holds her own very well at British Dressage competitions, doing very well at The National Dressage Championships and representing Great Britain in the CDI small tour at Hartpury! 2007 has seen her take national dressage titles at the Winters as well!!
Of course eventing is really Ruth’s thing and in 2006 she added the Scottish Open Champion title to her 2004 British Open title and was on the reserve list for the World Equestrian Games. She was also awarded the Jemima Johnson Memorial Trophy as the 'rider who has not been awarded a senior union flag and epitomizes the spirit of the sport.'
Ruth’s best horse, Two Thyme, can be a bit of a character and knows he’s rather a star. “He always tries his hardest at competitions,” she comments, “so I don’t mind if he is a bit cheeky sometimes!” With their first four star win at Luhmehlen in 2007 I would think he can get up to as much mischief as he likes!! She is working hard with her owners to develop her younger horses, which are currently working their way up the grades, with the aim of creating a team of four star horses. Ruth really has got her sights firmly set on representing Great Britain, at World and Olympic level, and wants to take home a medal or two at the same time – go Ruth!
